About Max Scheler
Max Scheler was an elite German ethical and social philosopher. He was arguably the most prominent German philosopher of the 20th century and is widely remembered for his groundbreaking works in phenomenology between 1897 and 1928.
Background, Education & Career
He was of Jewish descent and was born in Munich, Germany. In 1897, Scheler earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Jena, where he studied under the great Rudolf Eucken. He then became an associate professor at Jena in 1899 and lectured until he moved to the University of Munich in 1906.
Unfortunately, in 1910 his teaching contract with the University of Munich was terminated following accusations of adultery. However, he was appointed as a sociology and philosophy professor at the University of Cologne in 1919.
Major Works & Contributions to Phenomenology
Scheler notably developed the ideal philosophical method of Edmond Husserl, who is widely considered the father of phenomenology.
In 1954, Pope John Paul II wrote his thesis based on Scheler's philosophies and positions of phenomenology. In addition, the Pope later wrote numerous articles on the works of Scheler and broadened his influence on the Catholic Church.
His most notable works are "Man's Place in Nature" and "Formalism in Ethics and Non-Formal Ethics of Values."

The philosopher died from a heart attack in May of 1928.
