Early Life
At age 15, she left her native land for Paris, where she paid for drama lessons from French actor, René Simon, by working as an extra.
Career Highlights
She soon got noticed by director Marc Allegret, who gave her a screen name and a big break by getting her a role in the 1937 film “Gribouille.” While living in the U.S. in the 1940s, she landed roles in various films, including “Joan of Paris”, starring Paul Henreid; and “Passage to Marseille,” starring Humphrey Bogart.
Other notable film credits of the actress include 1946’s “La Symphonie Pastorale,”which earned her “Best Actress Award" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. In 1986, she was cast as Colette Dutilleul-Lemarchand in six episodes of the TV miniseries “Le Tiroir secret.”
Personal Life
Before tying the knot with filmmaker Gérard Oury in 1960, she was previously married to actors Henri Vidal and William Marshall. By the latter, she had a son called Mike Marshall, who was also an actor.
Recognition
She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1645 Vine Street. In 1992, she received an honorary César Award for her numerous contributions. Similarly, the Venice Film Festival honored her with the Career Golden Lion – a lifetime achievement award – for her works.
