About Mikhail Bakunin
Born Mikhail Alexandrovich Bakunin, he was a famous Russian anarchist, revolutionary agitator, author, and socialist during the 19th century.
Early life
He was raised in Pryamukhino, Moscow. However, at age 14, he moved to Saint Petersburg and joined the Artillery School as a Junker. He later rose to the “Praporshchik” rank. In 1835, he returned to his hometown in Moscow.
He later moved to Paris, where he met the great philosophers Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Karl Marx.
Anarchism & Controversies
France expelled him for strongly opposing the Russians when they occupied Poland. In 1849, his engagement in the 1848 Czech rebellion led to his arrest in Dresden. Consequently, he was deported to Russia and then sent to prison in Saint Petersburg. Bakunin was sent to exile in Siberia in 1857. Fortunately for him, he was able to escape through Japan to the USA.
In 1868, and as a member of the International Working Men’s Association, he led the anarchist faction and grew its influence significantly. In 1872, the Hague Congress was hugely affected by his struggles with Karl Marx. The quarrels split the Marxist and anarchist wings for many years.
Legacy
