About Mimar Sinan
Regarded as one of the greatest architects during the Ottoman period, Mimar Sinan helped to construct not less than 374 structures which included mosques, schools, mausoleums and hospitals. He was best known for designing the Suleiman Mosque located in Istanbul.
He was also responsible for the construction of the Selimiye Mosque. He served as the chief civil engineer under many sultans including Murad III, and Suleiman the Magnificent.
Education
According to some historians, Sinan studied at the Ibrahim Pasha School.
Recognitions
His image was featured on the 10,000 lira note which was used from 1982 to 1995.
Facts
Some popular structures that he worked on were the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, the Haseki Sultan Complex, and the Piyale Pasha Mosque.
He also trained some prominent architects such as Mimar Hayruddin, and Sedefkar Mehmed Agha.
Due to his works, he was compared to some famous architects like Italian sculptor Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni.
During his early years, he served in the military.
