About Mohamed Nasheed
Mohamed Nasheed is one of the most significant Maldivian political figures in history. He was President of the Maldives from 2008 until he resigned in 2012. In addition, he was the Maldives’ first democratically elected leader and the first president to resign from office.
Early Life & Education
The politician was born in Male, Maldives. Between 1971 and 1981, he schooled at Maldives’ Majeediyya School. In 1981 and 1982, he attended the “Overseas School of Colombo” in Sri Lanka. He relocated to England in August 1982 and completed secondary education at Dauntsey’s School. He then enrolled and learned maritime studies at Liverpool Polytechnic and graduated in 1989.
Presidency & Politics
In Maldives’ 2008 presidential elections, he was the presidential candidate of the “Maldivian Democratic Party”. He won 54.25% of the votes in the second round of the election, defeating incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had ruled the Maldives for 30 years.
He assumed office on November 11, 2008, and resigned on February 7, 2012. He later claimed that he was forced to resign as president “at gunpoint” and that his protesters had teamed up with influential Gayoom loyalists to stage his coup d'état.
However, during Maldives’ 2018 presidential elections, he campaigned for Gayoom to defeat and succeed President Yameen. Additionally, he was elected as the “19th Speaker of the People’s Majlis” on May 28, 2019.
