About Nam June Paik
Nam June Paik was arguably the most influential figure in the development of video art. Dubbed the “Father of Video Art”, he is widely regarded as the founder of video art, gaining global prominence with his visionary concepts and innovative art.
Background & Education
He was of Korean and Japanese descent and was born in Seoul, South Korea. However, in 1956 and at age 24, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in aesthetics from the University of Tokyo. He later studied music history at Munich University.
Career Highlights
During his studies at Munich University, he met composers George Maciunas and John Cage, and from 1962, he became part of the neo-dada movement “Fluxus”.
However, in 1964 he immigrated to the USA, where he broadened his TV and video works and held several exhibitions. Paik was also one of the earliest artists to work with Sony’s first portable audio and video recorder. He was notable for various astonishing artworks such as “Global Groove,” “TV Buddha,” and “Good Morning Mr. Orwell”.
Between 1974 and 1995, he was the subject of many notable exhibitions and retrospectives, such as the “Venice Biennale,” “Whitney Biennial,” and “Documenta”.
His masterpiece “The more, the better”, consisting of 1003 monitors, was used during the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
Death
He died at age 73, on January 29, 2006, after battling several stroke complications.
