Early Years
He grew up in his grandfather's Terkirdağ home but later, he moved to Istanbul to study Arabic, French and Persian.
Notable Facts
In later years, he accompanied his grandfather on his journey through the Ottoman Empire. It was during this period that he developed an eagerness for poetry and Turkish drama. He joined the elite Young Ottoman group and began writing articles in such areas as politics and foreign policy reforms.
In 1873, he staged one of his widely acclaimed plays “Vatan Yahut Silistre.” He followed up with others, including, “Akif Bey,” “Gülnihal” and “Kara Bela.” He also wrote such notable novels as “Vaveyla” and “Cezmi.”
Legacy
His works strongly impacted the Turkish national identity. He advanced the cause of democracy through his focus on values such as national loyalty and unity.
