Colonel Norman Dane Vaughan was an American dogsled driver and explorer whose rise to prominence came after his involvement in Admiral Byrd's first expedition to the South Pole.
Family Background
Norman Vaughan, who was born in Salem, Massachusetts, came from a well-to-do family. His father was involved in the leather tanner and shoe business.
His interest in exploration started right from a very young age, as he had huge admiration for renowned explorers like Captain James Cook and Vasco da Gama. He pulled himself out of Harvard when news spread of Admiral Richard E. Byrd's upcoming expedition to Antarctica in 1928.
Norman was accepted to join Admiral Byrd's expedition team to Antarctica in the late 1920s. In his documentary film "With Byrd at the South Pole" (1930), he can be seen appearing within the frame.
Career and Achievements
He served in World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Air Forces Search and Rescue team. As a dogsled driver, he and his teammates were responsible for carrying out a number of vital search and rescue missions in Greenland. By the time he left the army, he had risen to the rank of colonel.

His love for Alaska is the reason he moved to the U.S. state in 1973.
