Family and Education
He was the son of Guglielmo Barone Scalfaro and Rosalia Ussino. He enrolled at the Universita Cattolica and graduated with a law degree.
Scalfaro was married to Maria Inzitari but she passed on in 1944. The couple shared a child.
Political Career
The law degree he obtained from the University was what he used to begin his career. He served as a public prosecuting attorney and was the prosecutor during the trials of the following troopers: Arturo Missiato, Domenico Ricci, Salvatore Santoro and Raffaele Infante.
In 1972, he was appointed as the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, marking the beginning of his political career. His other governmental positions included Minister of Public Education, Minister of Interior and the President of the Chamber of Deputies.
The death of Giovanni Falcone in 1992 led to Scalfaro being elected as the president of Italy that same year. He served in that position for seven years, from 1992 to 1999.
Award
He was presented a Gold Medal of Merit for School, Culture and Art in 1973.
