About Oscar Niemeyer
Oscar Niemeyer made a name for himself as a major contributor to and a pioneer of modern architecture. The Brazilian architect worked in the industry for more than 78 years and is estimated to have worked on approximately 600 buildings and structures within and outside of Brazil. Notable amongst them are the Church of St. Francis of Assisi (his first-ever project to earn him overseas attention), Edificio Copan, the United Nations Headquarters, Cathedral of Brasilia and Palacio do Planalto.
Personal Life
His birth name was Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho. He was raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was married to his first wife, Annita Baldo from 1928 until her death in 2004. They had a daughter together. In 2006, he married Vera Lucia Cabreira, who had been his long-time secretary.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize and Pritzker Prize.
Death
He died on 5 December 2012 of cardiac arrest aged 104.
