About Otto Graf Lambsdorff
German politician Otto Graf Lambsdorff served as Federal Minister of Economic Affairs between the late 70’s and early 80’s. Despite having his reputation tainted in the mid-1980s after being forced to quit as a minister and convicted of tax evasion in the Flick scandal, he remained a major political figure.
Background
He participated in World War II, and was held as a prisoner of war until 1946. He lost his lower left leg in an Allied strafing assault in 1945. After the war, he studied law at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne, where he earned a PhD.
Political Career
In 1951, he joined the Freedom Liberal Party, and in 1972, he was elected to represent the party in the Bundestag. He served as West Germany's Federal Minister of Economics between 1977 and 1984.
On account of the Flick Scandal; a political controversy involving contributions to numerous political parties by the Flick firm, he was compelled to quit. He was found guilty of tax evasion in 1987.
Lambsdorff was re-elected to the German Parliament and worked as the economics spokesman for his parliamentary group. He was the FDP's chairman from 1988 - 1993.
Personal Life
He had three kids from two different marriages.
