Background
Harbach was born in Salt Lake, Utah, he always wanted to be an English professor so he attended Knox College. He taught English and public speaking at Whitman College, Washington after graduation. Harbach enrolled in Columbia University but dropped out due to financial difficulties and started working as a newspaper reporter by the early 1900s.
Career
In 1920 this Utah-born lyricist composed his first opera with composer Karl Hoschna but was not produced. His first produced work was on “Three Twins” in 1980, it was performed 233 times, and the song “Cuddle Up A Little Closer, Lovey Mine” became an instant hit. He continued to work with Hoschna and other composers like his protégé Oscar Hammerstein II where he wrote the 1920 Broadway musical “Tickle Me”. Harbach also served as president of the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in 1950.
Personal Life
This prolific lyricist tied the knot with Eloise Smith Dougall in 1918 and they had two sons William and Robert.
