About Phil Rizzuto
Phil “Scooter” Rizzuto was an American professional baseball shortstop. He was associated with the New York Yankees for many decades. As a renowned bunter for the All-Star American League, he led in the sacrifice of bunts four times.
Early Life
He was born in Glendale, Queens to Fiore and Rose Rizutto. He is of American and Italian descent. Growing up, Phil was passionate about baseball and wanted to play for his hometown but his small size made him ineligible.
Personal Life
The player fell in love and married Cora Anne Ellenborn in 1943. The lovebirds had 3 daughters and a son. Until his death in 2007, they remained a couple.
Career Highlights
The New York Yankee player remained active for 13 years and earned his place as a Hall of Famer. He was a force to reckon with as a player and came 2nd in the American League Most valuable Player Awards. His career soared especially in 1950 and won him the MVP Award.
Achievements
He, with the Yankees, won the World Series multiple times. Rizutto was awarded 4 titles as a result of this victory.
In 1985, his jersey number 10 was retired by the New York Yankees.
Death
He died on August 13, 2007, aged 89. He was survived by his wife and four children.
