About Pope Gregory XIII
Before he was appointed to lead the Roman Catholic Church in 1572, Pope Gregory XIII worked under Pope Paul III as an abbreviator and judge. Within that same period, he was named Campagna e Marittima’s vice-chancellor. He was later made San Sisto Vecchio’s Cardinal-Priest.
After the demise of Pope Pius V he was appointed the head of the Papal States, and pope of the Church in 1572. He’s globally celebrated for commissioning the popular Gregorian calendar.
Family
His original name was Ugo Boncompagni. He was raised by his parents Angela Marescalchi and Cristoforo Boncompagni. Before taking the holy orders, he and a lady called Maddalena Fulchini had a son called Giacomo Boncompagni.
Trivia
He taught many popular Catholic leaders including Charles Borromeo, Alexander Farnese, and Reginald Pole.
