About Pyotr Kapitsa
Soviet physicist and engineer Pyotr Kapitsa became a household name through his research on low-temperature physics. He got his start as a researcher in the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory in magnetic fields alongside Ernest Rutherford, working with him for more than a decade. He was forced to abandon that research field after the Soviet government prevented him from returning to Great Britain after he visited his parents in 1934. Thus, he turned his attention to the study of liquid helium, which eventually led to several discoveries in the field of low-temperature physics.
Family Life
He was the son of Olga Leronimovna and Leonid Petrovich Kapitsa, a military engineer. He lost his wife and two children to the 1918/19 flu epidemic. His marriage to Anna Alekseevna Krylova in 1927 made him the son-in-law of mathematician A.N. Krylov. They had two children together.
Achievements
He won the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics and was also a recipient of the Faraday Medal, Rutherford Medal and Prize and the Lomonosov Gold Medal.
