About Ram Mohan Roy
A preeminent figure in Indian history is Ram Mohan Roy. He was a famous Indian reformer and amongst the founding leaders of “Brahmo Sabha,” – a vibrant religious and social reform movement of India. He challenged and disputed traditional Hindu culture and outlined progressive lines for Indian society during British rule. As a result, Roy is often referred to as the “father of modern India.”
Social and political activism
Roy was the founder and editor of India’s first weekly newspapers. In 1823, he used his media influence to organize protests and campaigns for Indians to have freedom of speech as their natural rights under the British censorship rule.
In addition, his newspapers persistently criticized superstitious Hindu practices such as “Suttee” – the ritual that involved immolating widows on the corpse and pyres of their dead husbands.
His efforts encouraged the British Governing Council to make a law prohibiting Suttee and child marriages from 1829 in India.
Roy established Anglo-Hindu School in 1822 and Vedanta College in 1826. He taught many Indian people his Hindu monotheistic theories in these schools. Roy protested against the Bengal government’s plan to make the Indian college curriculum traditional and Sanskrit. However, he suggested a modern and Western curriculum that would prepare Bengal youth for modern advances.
