About Ramakrishna
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s frequent spiritual ecstasies were what affirmed his mystic status to his followers. The 19th-century Hindu leader was reportedly just six years old when he experienced his first spiritual ecstasy.
At 20 years old, he became the priest of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, taking over from his elder brother, Ramkumar, who had passed away.
Ramakrishna is famous for having founded the Ramakrishna Order. His philosophies include Bhakti, Tantra and Advaita Vedanta.
Family Life
He was born to Chandramani Devi and Khudiram Chattopadhyay who both reportedly had spiritual visions prior to his birth.
His marriage to Sarada Devi (born Mukhopadhyaya), who was eighteen years his junior, was never consummated. This was due to his adoption of sannyasi (a life of renunciation).
Other Religious Practices
He reportedly practised Islam and Christianity for short periods each after encounters with a Sufi and the Bible, respectively.
Death
He died on 16 August 1886 from throat cancer.
