About Rick Danko
Richard Clare Danko, famously known by his stage name Rick Danko, was a renowned Canadian musician, songwriter, and instrumentalist in the mid to late 1900s. He was a founding member of the 20th century Canadian-American rock band, “The Band.”
Background & Early Life
Danko was of Ukrainian descent and was born into a musically inclined family in Blayney, Ontario, Canada.
He studied at the Simcoe Composite School, where he learned the guitar and several other musical instruments and principles. By the age of 17, Danko had established his melodic band, The Starlights, and started performing at many weddings and dancing halls.
Career Highlights
From 1960 until 1964, he was the leading bassist for “The Hawks” band. During this period, he recorded many tracks with the group, including band member Lenny Breau’s “The Hallmark Sessions” album in 1960. After leaving “The Hawks” in 1964, he became part of the backup musical for veteran musician Ronnie Hawkins.
Between 1968 and 1978, he was part of the rock band “The Band.” During this period, they released seven hit studio albums. However, after splitting up in 1978, they reformed in 1983, and he participated in the Band’s activities until he passed away in 1999.
Death
He died at age 55 from heart failure on December 10, 1999 in Marbletown, New York.
