Rik Van Looy is a Belgian former professional cyclist from the post-war era. He won more classics than any other professional cyclist ever. With 37 victories, he ranks (as of 2021) ninth on the list of all-time cyclists in Grand Tour stage victories.
Nicknames
During his playing years, he went by aliases such as “The Emperor of Herentals” or “the King of the Classics”.
Career and Notable Accomplishments
He began delivering newspapers while still a young man on huge bicycles. He won the team road race gold medal at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics and both the Giro di Lombardia and the Tour of Flanders in 1959.
In 1960 and 1961, he won the World Championship road race. In the grand tours, he took first place in the points classification at the 1963 Tour de France and the 1959 and 1965 Vuelta a Espana.
The Belgian cyclist was the first cyclist to win all five of cycling's major races: Paris-Roubaix, Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Tour of Flanders.
