About Robert Frank
Robert Frank initially took to photography as a form of escapism from his family, who were more business-minded. He made his first book of photographs, “40 Fotos” by hand in 1946 and the following year, he moved to the United States where he got hired by Harper’s Bazaar as a fashion photographer. He later became a household name through the publication of his photographic book, “The Americans” in 1958.
Family Life
He was born to Hermann Frank and Rosa Zucker who raised him in Zurich, Switzerland. He had an elder brother named Manfred. He was first married to English visual artist Mary Frank with whom he had two children. He later married American artist June Leaf.
Achievements
He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1955, a Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 1996 and an Edward MacDowell Medal in 2002.
Trivia
He co-directed three films with novelist and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer.
