About Rod Steiger
Rodney Stephen Steiger left a legacy as one of the most dynamic and charismatic Hollywood stars. Having launched his career in acting through television appearances in 1947, his film debut followed in 1951 through “Teresa”. A master of method acting, he is remembered for notable film performances such as Bill Gillespie in “In the Heat of the Night”, Sol Nazerman in “The Pawnbroker”, Al Capone in “Al Capone”, Victor Ipolitovich Komarovsky in “Doctor Zhivago” and Napoleon Bonaparte in “Waterloo”.
Family Life
He was brought up by his mother, Lorraine Driver in New Jersey. He left home at 16 due to his mother’s alcoholism. He never met his father, Frederick Steiger, who was a vaudevillian. A four-time divorcee, actress Claire Bloom was one of his ex-wives. His fifth wife was actress Joan Benedict Steiger.
Achievements
He won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and two BAFTA Film Awards.
Death
He died on 9th July 2002 from pneumonia.
