About Rómulo Gallegos
Rómulo Gallegos was selected as Venezuela’s Minister for Public Education in 1936 before he was voted into Congress the following year. After serving for three years, he was made the Mayor of his hometown, Caracas. A member of the Acción Democrática political party, Gallegos contested in the 1947 presidential elections.
His presidential bid was successful and was sworn into office in 1948. However, he was overthrown some months later during the infamous Venezuelan coup d'état which was led by army officers like Carlos Delgado Chalbaud, and Marcos Pérez Jiménez. He would be remembered for increasing the country’s tax revenues on oil products.
As a Writer
Gallegos was regarded as one of Latin America’s most relevant writers during the 20th Century. He started his literary works in the early 1900s, but gained nationwide attention in 1929 when he published his novel titled “Doña Bárbara”. His other well-known works are titled “Canaima” and “Cantaclaro”. The latter inspired the 1946 film of similar name.
Family
He was the son of Rita Freire Guruceaga and Rómulo Gallegos Osío. His wife Teotiste Arocha Egui became the First Lady of Venezuela in 1948.
Honors
Gallegos was the recipient of the 1958 National Literature Prize. He was also a member of the Venezuelan Academy of the Language.
