Rosamunde Pilcher was a renowned British writer who specialized in mainstream fiction, romance novels, and short stories. Until her retirement in 1949, Pilcher had sold over 60 million copies of her work.
Early Life and Background
Pilcher was to parents Helen and Charles Scott. She began writing at the tender age of 7 and published her first book at 15. She enrolled in the School of St. Clare in Penzance and Howell's School before attending college at Miss Kerr-Sanders' Secretarial College.
Career and Notable Works
Pilcher published her first book titled “Half-Way to the Moon” in 1949 under the pen name Jane Foster. After posting about 10 more books, she finally dropped her pen name and signed her real name in all her works.
Her 1987 novel “The Shell Seekers” is regarded by many as the novel that helped her writing career lift off. The novel was a huge success, as it sold more than 9 million copies as well as being translated into more than 38 languages.
Some of her other notable works are “September”, “A Secret to Tell”, “The Day of the Storm”, “Coming Home”, and "Winter Solstice". Some of her works, such as "Four Seasons" have been adapted as films. Similarly, the 1989 Hallmark Hall of Fame television film “The Shell Seekers” was based on her novel.
Personal Life
Rosamunde served with the Women's Royal Naval Service from 1943 until 1946. In December 1946, she married Graham Hope Pilcher and had 4 children with him.
She hung up her pen in 2000. Pilcher died at 94 in February 2019 due to a stroke.
