About Sam Phillips
Sam Phillips was an American businessman who established himself in the music industry. Celebrated for his role in developing the Rock and Roll genre, Phillips operated many radio networks in cities like Alabama and Florence.
He began his career in the 1940s as a radio engineer and DJ. During his early years, he worked with radio stations like WREC and WLAY. He started his recording career in 1950 when he established the Memphis Recording Service, later known as Sun Studio.
Two years later, he launched his record label dubbed Sun Records. Through that, he worked with many famous artists like Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley.
Other works
Aside from the above-mentioned businesses, Phillips had other side ventures. In 1957, he founded Phillips International Records. He was also known to be one of the earliest investors in the famous Holiday Inn hotels.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents Charles Tucker Phillips and Madge Ella Lovelace. He had seven other siblings. His two children with Rebecca Irene Burns were Jerry and Knox.
Honors
He became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He has also been elected into some well-known hall of fames including the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame.

American actor Chad Michael Murray portrayed his character in the TV series titled “Sun Records”.
