About Samuel Wilson
Samuel Wilson was a famous meat packer who is reportedly the reason behind the personification of the United States, known as “Uncle Sam.”
Life and Career
Wilson was born in Arlington, Massachusetts. His family was one of the oldest families in Boston at that time.
In 1781, when he was fourteen, he joined the Continental Army, where he spent his time caring for cattle and packaging meat for the soldiers fighting against the British. Eight years later, he relocated to Troy, New York, with his older brother. They were one of the first settlers to arrive in the town. The brothers partnered and built several businesses in the township.
Uncle Sam – Origin Story
However, it wasn’t until the War of 1812 that he gained much fame. The American army appointed Wilson as a meat inspector. He was responsible for ensuring that meat was packaged according to standards. Most of the packaged meat was shipped to a camp of soldiers in Greenbush, New York. Many soldiers were from Troy and were familiar with Wilson and his nickname Uncle Sam. They associated his nickname with the U.S. initials, and with time almost every army property was linked to that name.
Personal Life
Wilson was married to Betsey Mann in 1797 and had four children. He died in 1854 at the age of 87.
