About Selma Lagerlöf
Lagerlof was an author who became the first Swedish woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature as a result of her remarkable works.
Family and Education
She was the fifth child of Erik Gustaf Lagerlof and Louise Lagerlof. Growing up, she received most of her education at home. She then went on to study as a teacher at Royal Seminary.
Writing Career
She developed interests in reading and decided to be a writer after reading a novel titled “Osceola” written by Thomas Mayne Reid.
Before becoming an author, she was a professional teacher and taught for 10 years at an all-girls high school. She used storytelling as a tool to attract the attention of her students.
Her first novel “Gosta Berling’s” Saga was released while she was a teacher. She earned a publishing contract for the book. The book was also supported financially by a Swedish philanthropist Fredrika Limnell.
She resigned from her teaching profession to pursue her dream as an author. Six years after her resignation, she issued a book titled “Jerusalem” which was inspired by her trip to Jerusalem. In 1996, the book was adapted into a Billie August-directed film of the same title.
Other books she published include “Bannlyst”, “Charlotte Lowenskold”, and “Anna Svard.”
Most of her books were adapted into movies, as she sold her movie rights to film producers.
Awards and Honors
She was awarded the Swedish IIIis quorum for her contributions to her country.
Lagerlof was the first woman to appear on the Swedish bank note.

She was said to be sexually attracted to women but chose to keep it a secret.
