About Septimus Winner
Septimus Winner was a 19th Century American songwriter best known for his 1855 work titled "Listen to the Mockingbird". Until 1902, the future Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee partnered with many musicians including Joseph Eastburn Winner, who was also his biological brother.
He went on to write other popular songs including "Carry Me Back to Tennessee (or "Ellie Rhee")" and "Ten Little Injuns", which was a remake of the children’s song "Ten Little Indians".
Personal Life
He was one of the children of Mary Ann and her husband Joseph E. Winner. He was married to Hannah Jane Guyer with whom he had four kids including Margaret F. Winner, who would become a popular artist.
Education
The songwriter was a student of Philadelphia Central High School.
Fun facts
Winner worked under a number of pseudonyms including Mark Mason, Paul Stenton, and Alice Hawthorne.
He completed about 1,800 arrangements for piano and violin.
