About Shirley Ardell Mason
Shirley Ardell Mason’s life continues to remain a mystery despite her death over twenty years ago. The American art teacher’s mental illness; dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder) and its treatment by Cornelia B. Wilbur, a psychoanalyst, have been the subjects of highly-publicized controversies.
Her life with the disorder was chronicled in the book, “Sybil: The True Story of a Woman Possessed by 16 Separate Personalities” while concealing her actual identity. Claims made by the writer, Floreta Schreiber have been challenged multiple times.
Personal Life
She was the only child of Martha Alice Atkinson and Walter Wingfield Mason who survived infancy. She was raised in Dodge Center, Minnesota. There were claims that her mother was schizophrenic. Mason studied art at Mankato State College and Columbia University. She went on to teach at a community college and open a home-based art gallery.
