About Steve Reich
Steve Reich is one of the pioneers of minimal music which was predominant during the 1960s. His ability to use slow harmonic tempo, canons, and repetitive figures made him one of the most adorable composers of his generation. He’s best known for works like "Double Sextet", “Different Trains” and “Music for 18 Musicians”.
He mostly expresses his displeasure about serialism, indeterminacy, and classical traditions from the West through his music.
Family
He was born to Leonard Reich and June Sillman, who was an actress and lyricist. Jonathan Carroll is his step-brother. He has been married to Beryl Korot whom he worked with on the 1993 opera titled "The Cave".
Education
The American studied at Cornell University before he joined the Juilliard School. He was further trained at Mills College.
Achievements
He won the Polar Music Prize in 2007 and received the Pulitzer Prize for Music two years later.
Trivia
During the initial stages of his career he worked with the San Francisco Tape Music Center, where he performed alongside Ramon Sender, Pauline Oliveros, and Morton Subotnick.
Roland Kohloff taught him how to play the drums.
According to him, he was influenced by the likes of Stravinsky, J. S. Bach, and Bartók.
