A classically-trained actor, Sir Tom Courtenay has naturally preferred the stage to the screen.
However, he has achieved critical acclaim even with the limited number of roles he has played in films and television series over a 60-year period. They include Pasha Antipov / Strelnikov in the epic romantic film, “Doctor Zhivago” and Colin Smith in the 1962 film, “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner”.
He became known in the 2000s and 2010s on television for his roles in the series “Little Dorrit” and “Unforgotten”.
Family Life
He was the son of a boat painter named Thomas Henry Courtenay and his wife, Annie Eliza Quest. Actress Cheryl was his first wife. He married a Royal Exchange Theatre stage manager called Isabel Crossley in 1988.
