About Valter Birsa
The former Slovenian footballer played as an attacking midfielder for major Italian clubs, including AC Milan and Genoa. Other European clubs that the Slovenian international played for include Sochaux and Auxerre. Between 2019 and 2020, he was on the books of Cagliari, where he played over 20 competitive games.
Early Life
Originally from Yugoslavia, Birsa started his football journey at ND Bilje when he was age 5. His impressive skills earned him a transfer to Primorje and later to Gorcia. He was 17 at the time.
Club Career
In 2006, he joined French football club Sochaux where together with the team, won 2007 Coupe de France. Three years later, he was sent on loan to Auxerre. The loan deal turned into a permanent contract that lasted until 2011.
His tactical footballing during which period he debuted at the UEFA Champions League against Ajax which ended in a 2-1 win for the Amsterdam-based club. In early 201, he signed a 4-year deal with Genoa and appeared in 9 games for the Serie A club. Following his loan to Torino, he joined AC Millan in August 2013 where he found the net against Sampdoria. Later in July 2014, he signed with Chievo initially on loan, then later for 3 years.
All in all, he was capped 90 times for his national side. His first cap came in 2006.
Notable Accomplishments
With Gorica, he won the Slovenian PrvaLiga twice – in 2004/5 and 2005/06 seasons.
He was crowned Slovenian Footballer of the Year in 2010.

In 2012, he tied the knot with his long-term sweetheart, Mateja.
