About Victor Emmanuel III of Italy
Victor Emmanuel III was the Italian Kingdom’s ruler from July 29, 1900, until May 9, 1946. As an indecisive and tentative ruler, political violence and conflicts plagued his reign. In addition, he engaged in the two world wars, and it was his actions that led to the fall of the Italian monarchy and fascism.
Early life
He was born in Naples, Kingdom of Italy, and was the only legitimate son of King Umberto I of Italy. During childhood, he suffered from physical disabilities that made it difficult to walk. As a result, he wore orthopedic instruments, which gave his legs strength, and was often hidden from the public.
Reign
After receiving traditional military education, he ascended the throne in 1900, following the murder of King Umber I.
He ruled as a tractable monarch and accepted a liberal and impartial cabinet. In 1911, he readily acceded to Italy’s violence against the Turkey kingdom. He also reluctantly accepted Italy’s involvement in World War I. During the war, his Prime Minister Benito Mussolini led with dictatorship and reduced the king to a mere figurehead. However, in 1943, and during World War II, the king arrested Mussolini.
In 1946, he abdicated the throne for his legitimate son, Umberto II.
Death
He died in exile in Alexandria, Egypt, and was buried at St. Catherine’s Cathedral, Alexandria.
