About W. Somerset Maugham
As one of the most popular amongst his contemporaries, English author William Somerset Maugham also earned a reputation for his huge financial gains from his work. He wrote novels, plays and short stories.
Upon the insistence of his uncle who raised him, he trained to become a doctor but he decided not to pursue the profession after the success of his debut novel, “Liza of Lambeth”, written in 1897.
His significant works include “Of Human Bondage”, “Cakes and Ale” and “The Moon and Sixpence”.
Family Life
He was born to Edith Mary Snell and Robert Ormond Maugham as the fourth of their six sons.
His mistress-turned wife, Syrie Maugham, was still married to pharmaceutical entrepreneur Henry Wellcome when she had Maugham’s only child, Mary Elizabeth in 1915.
Later on, he acknowledged his homosexuality and lived with his partner, Gerald Haxton and after his death, Alan Searle.
Death
He died on 16 December 1965 at 91 years old.
