About Walter Cunningham
The American astronaut was a one-time fighter pilot and physicist. He gained wider recognition for being part of the Apollo 7 mission of the late 1960s.
Personal life and Ex-Spouse
Cunningham was born to Walter W. Cunningham and graduated from Venice High School and University of California.
The astronaut was formerly married to Lo Ella Irby and he had two children with her before they parted company.
As an Astronaut
Cunningham before his selection to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) worked for three years at RAND Corporation. His selection to NASA came about when he was chosen to be part of the third group of astronauts selected by NASA in 1963.
In five years later, he was among the astronauts who partook in the Apollo 7 mission. The mission included the late Walter Marty Schirra Jr. It was Cunningham’s responsibility to control all spacecraft systems, excluding navigation.
He retired as an astronaut in 1971; and from 1971, he decided to venture into something new. He took a short business course at Harvard Business School. He then became an investor in a number of private companies.
Accomplishments
The former astronaut scooped several awards for his time in NASA. His awards include: NASA Distinguished Service Medal, NASA Exceptional Service Medal.
In 1983, Cunningham was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame.
Fun Fact
He wrote the 1977 book “All-American Boys”.
