About Walter Tewksbury
Before his death in 1968, athlete Walter Tewksbury was the oldest Olympian in the world. The “sprinter without a peer” excelled at the 1900 Olympic games, where he won five medals in track and field.
Life
The Pennsylvania native graduated from Penn State University in 1899 with a degree in dentistry. While he was a student, he competed and won in athletic competitions. After graduating from school, he competed in the Olympic Games in Paris, France and won five gold medals: two gold, two silver and one bronze.
Tewksbury retired from sports in 1913 and opened his dental practice. He was married to Marion Metcalf and had three children, Roland, Pamela, Mary and Jerry.
Achievements
He was a four-time National Intercollegiate Track champion. In 1991, Tewksbury was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.
Trivia
He trained for the Olympics hurdles race by jumping over gravestones.
