About William Belknap
William Belknap was the 30th US Secretary of War who served under then-President Ulysses S. Grant. In 1876, he was impeached after it was revealed he had a role in the trader post scandal.
Early Life, Education & Career
Belknap was born in Newburgh, New York and attended Princeton College in 1848 and later at Georgetown University, where he studied law. He was called to the bar in 1851 and five years later, was elected to the Iowa state legislature, where he served as an anti-slavery Democrat.
American Civil War
He joined the Union Army as a Democrat in 1861 and was tasked with forming the 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Belknap and the infantry fought in numerous battles, including the Battle of Corinth and the Battle of Atlanta.
Controversy
After the war, he served as Secretary of War in 1869. However, he was forced to resign after being accused of corruption. Despite his impeachment, he was acquitted by the Senate. Belknap passed away in 1890.
