About Wolfram von Richthofen
Wolfram von Richtofen was a field marshall who served under the German Air Service. During World War I, he was named a flying ace after taking down eight enemy aircrafts and later rose through rankings to become Generalfeldmarschall during World War II.
Background
Richtofen joined the German cavalry in 1913 when he was 18, fighting for the country during the First World War. In 1917, he decided to transfer to the Air Service and flew his first mission in April of the following year until the war ended a few months later.
He also fought in the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and three years later, in 1939, he led the aerial invasion of Poland, which sparked the Second World War.
Death
In the height of the Second World War, Richtofen was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died in 1945 as a prisoner of war after the American Third Army took over the hospital where he received care.
