About Yousuf Karsh
Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian photographer who became an international icon through his portraits of famous personalities. Regarded as one of the 20th century’s greatest portrait photographers, he pursued his craft for six decades. He got his big break through “The Roaring Lion”, a photographic portrait he took in 1941 of Winston Churchill, who was then the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Other personalities he took portraits of include author Ernest Hemmingway, artist Georgia O’Keeffe, actress Joan Crawford and contralto Portia White.
Family Life
His mother, Bahia Nakash was an educated and well-read woman while his father, Amsih Karsh was a merchant. His brother Malak also became a photographer. His family escaped to Syria during the Armenian genocide and he was later sent to Canada. He was married to Solange Gauthier from 1939 until her death in 1961. In 1962, he got married to a medical writer, Estrellita Nachbar.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Order of Canada, the Canada Council Medal and the Golden Plate Award.
Death
He died from surgery complications on July 13, 2002 at age 93.
