About Željko Ražnatović
Infamously called Arkan, Zeljko Raznatovic was one of the world’s most powerful organized crime leaders during his lifetime. During the Yugoslavia Wars, he was the leader of the Serb paramilitary group, “Serb Volunteer Guard.”
Background & Early Life
Brezice, Yugoslavia, was his birthplace. He was allegedly raised by a strict father who regularly abused him physically.
He began his criminal life as a child. At age fourteen and in 1966, he was arrested for snatching several women’s purses. He spent the next year in Juvenile detention.
Crimes & Arrest
Between the 19270s and 1980s, he was involved in numerous criminal activities in Western Europe, such as bank heists and jewelry robberies. Convicted of several crimes, he escaped from prisons in Germany, Belgium, and Netherland.
He began the formation of his paramilitary force, “The Serb Volunteer Guard,” in 1990. Among the alleged atrocities and crimes of the group were the killings of over 250 Croatian civilians during Vukovar’s siege in 1991.
In 1997, he was indicted by the UN’s “International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia” for committing serious crimes against the entire humanity.
Death
Before the UN tried him, masked men managed to kill him on 15 January 2000 in a Belgrade hotel where he was being kept. He died at age 47.
