About Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto officially joined Pakistani politics in the 1950s as a member of the cabinet of Iskander Mirza, the country’s first president. He also served as the 8th Minister of Foreign Affairs, under the second president, Ayub Khan, before he eventually became the fourth president of Pakistan in 1971.
His longest and most important position was as the 9th Prime Minister of Pakistan, which he occupied from 1973 to 1977, when he was deposed in a coup.
Family Life
He was the third child of Khursheed Begum and politician Shah Nawaz Bhutto. He had two wives: Shireen Amir Begum and Nusrat Ispahani, and four children, including assassinated Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto.
Arrest, Trial and Execution
After a coup by Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq in July 1977, he was detained, released after a month and re-arrested the following month amid allegations of ordering a political opponent’s murder. Although he was initially found not guilty, there was a retrial, after which he was sentenced to death. He was executed, through hanging, on 4 April 1979.
