Ahmed Ben Bella was a leading figure of the National Liberation Front (FLN) Political Party in Algeria. His movement is praised for helping Algeria secure independence from France in 1962. Ben Bella then went on to become Algeria’s first elected president, serving from 193 to 1965.

The Algerian leader and statesman was born in Maghnia, Algeria to Moroccan parents, where he went through a French educational system.
Rise to Power
Ben Bella enlisted in the French Army to fight in World War II. His passion against racial discrimination against Africans was heightened by his experiences in the French army.
On his return, the war veteran led the National Liberation Front (FLN) to fight aggressively against French rule, during which he was imprisoned for 6 years [1956-1962]. The Algerian revolutionary was elected president of Algeria after his release in 1963; but was deposed in a coup only 2 years later [in 1965] and spent 15 years under house arrest.
The political veteran was exiled for 10 years after his release. The statesman took up various national and continental political roles in his later years till he died at age 95 [in 2012].
Trivia
The Algerian politician played briefly as a midfielder for French Football club Olympique de Marseille [1939/1940].
