About Alben W. Barkley
The astute lawyer and politician, Alben William Barkley, was the 35th vice president of the United States of America under President Harry Truman. He was a staunch Democrat.
Political Highlights
After gaining over a decade of legal experience both on the bar and on the bench in his home-state of Kentucky, the proven prosecutor was elected as a US House Representative and later into the US senate.
Barkley’s rise in politics was swift and consistent. At the peak of his congressional career, the brilliant democrat was appointed Senate Majority Leader, where he served for a decade, from 1937 to 1947.
He played a pivotal role in influencing policies in favor of his party. He served in key senate committees, including the foreign affairs and finance committees for several years.
The seasoned congressman was central to the development and implementation of the New Deal – a tenacious program of key developments and grand reforms spearheaded by then U.S.-President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Barkley was later appointed vice president after the initial prospect, William Douglas, turned down the offer. He served for one term (from 1949 to 1953) in President Truman’s administration.
Death
On April 30, 1956, the accomplished statesman and lawyer died of a heart attack in the middle of a speaking engagement. He was 78.
Spouse and Children
He got married to Dorothy Brower in 1903. By her, he fathered three children – Laura, Marion, and David. Through his daughter Laura, he was the father-in-law of Douglas MacArthur II, a U.S. diplomat.
Trivia
In 1943, Barkley had a public falling out with President Franklin Roosevelt over tax increases, which led him to resign his position as the floor leader. Their relationship was never the same afterward.
