Early Life
The youngest of five children, he was born in Rome. He studied briefly at Milan's Accademia dei filodrammatici.
“Great War” and Selected Filmography
His acting career took off in his teenage years. In the 1930s, he played minor roles in wartime films. He gave life to the character of Fernando Rivoli in the 1952 comedy “The White Sheik.” He featured in one of the most critically acclaimed Italian comedies “Great War.” The film, which was directed by Italian filmmaker Mario Monicelli, starred Vittorio Gassman, Folco Lulli, and Silvana Mangano.
A great voice actor, Sordi voiced Oliver Hardy in the Italian versions of “Laurel and Hardy.” He also played directorial roles in such Italian titles as the 1996 comedy “Fumo di Londra”, “Amore mio, aiutami”, “Polvere di stele”, and Io e Caterina”, among others.
Personal Life
Despite having no children, he was in a 9-year relationship with actress Andreina Pagnani.
Recognition
In 1962, he earned a nomination at the BAFTA Film Awards for “Best Foreign Actor.”
Death
He died on February 24, 2003. The cause of death was pneumonia laced with bronchitis.
