About Alfonso XIII of Spain
Alfonso XIII was named as the King of Spain the same day he was born. His mother, Maria Christina of Austria, took charge of the kingdom until his 16th birthday when he became mature for the position.
During his reign, he encountered a number of challenges which included Catalan nationalism and Rif War. He would be remembered for his kind gesture during the First World War when he created an office to help prisoners of the war from both parties. He vacated the throne in 1931 after Spain’s Second Republic was established. The monarch's rule in the country came to an end after his tenure.
Family
He succeeded his dad, Alfonso XII, who ruled from 1874 to 1885. He married Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg in 1906. Their children include Alfonso, Prince of Asturias; Infanta María Cristina; and Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona.
Honors
In 1917, his name was up for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work during WWI. He also received lots of medals including Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III (Spain), Stranger Knight of the Garter (UK), and Knight of St. Andrew (Russian Empire).
Trivia
He loved soccer which led to the popularization of the term “real” (royal), as adopted in the names of famous Spanish teams like Real Madrid, Real Betis, and Real Sociedad.
