About Andrew Goodpaster
Andrew Jackson Goodpaster gained recognition after serving as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander as well as being Commander in Chief of the United States European Command in 1969. Over the course of seven administrations, he excelled as a military leader, a scholar, and, most importantly, an extraordinary presidential adviser.
Early Life
Goodpaster joined the United States Military Academy in 1935 and later became a part of the Corps of Engineers in 1939 where he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant.
Career
Goodpaster started out as a White House Staff Secretary from 1954 to 1961 and was then promoted to Superintendent of the United States Military Academy from 1977 to 1981. Goodpaster later became Director of the Joint Staff from 1966 to 1967 and finally held the position of Commander in Chief of NATO/Supreme Allied Commander Europe (CINCEUR) from 1969.
