He is a screenwriter, producer and director most known for his involvement in the 1993 film “Rudy”.
Childhood and Education
Although he was born in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised in Bloomington, Indiana. He has a degree in political science. He also attended the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.
Major Works
Pizzo’s works are mostly centered on sports and inspired by real life stories and “real people”, as he describes it. He started his career at Warner Brothers Television where worked with the story development team. He also worked at Time-Life Films and Feature Films Production.
His most notable collaboration came in the 1980s and early 1990s, when he collaborated with David Anspaugh to produce “Rudy” and “The Game of their Lives”.
His other acclaimed works include “Bleed for This”, “Father Figure” and “My All-American”. He was the director and screenwriter for the latter.
Awards and Honors
Pizzo received Indiana’s Governor’s Awards in 1995 and in 2000, Franklin College offered him an honorary doctorate.
He is an inductee of three halls of fame; the National Italian American Sports, Indiana Basketball and the Monroe County Sports.
He has won awards from Indiana Film Journalist Association, Indiana University College of Arts (Distinguished Alumni Award) and Texas Motion Pictures Alliance (TXMPA Impact Awards).
The Indiana Historical Society also named him “a Living Legend” in 2011.
Trivia
He directed many “Fulfilling the Promise” television commercials that promoted Indiana University, his alma mater.
