About Barry Zorthian
This Armenian-American was the last surviving policy maker of the Vietnam War era. He served four years as the press spokesman for the U. S. government in South Vietnam from 1964 to 1968.
Background
Born on October 8, 1920, to Armenian parents in Turkey, he did not have an easy childhood as both his parents were targeted by Turkish officials. His family eventually migrated to the United States where Zorthian graduated from Yale University in 1941. He also earned a law degree from New York University.
Career
Zorthian worked for thirteen years with the Voice of America (VOA) and served as a diplomat in India. In 1964, Zorthian was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to serve as an intermediary between the government and the news reporters that were covering the Vietnam War. He held daily press briefings with reporters, including reporters that were nicknamed “Five O'Clock Follies”. Those reporters felt the government was not transparent enough about the war. Zorthian worked as a lobbyist in the 1970s.
Death
About five months after his wife Margaret Aylaian died, Zorthian passed away, aged 90.
