About Bettino Craxi
Bettino Craxi was one-time prime minister of Italy and leader of the Italian Socialist Party for almost two decades. He was the youngest prime minister of Italy when he took office in 1983.
Background
Bettino Craxi was born in Milan to a lawyer and socialist father. He never completed his law degree because of his political commitments.
Political Journey
The budding politician joined the Italian Socialist Party at the age of 18. Bettino won a seat on the Milan city council in 1960. Five years after that, he was secretary of the Milan office of the Socialist Party and member of the national party's executive committee.
Craxi was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as a delegate from Milan in 1968; a feat his father fell short of achieving. He retained the seat for four consecutive terms. He also served as national secretary for the Socialist Party.
The Italian statesman is credited with replacing the socialist party’s traditional commitment to extremism with one of "pragmatism, gradualism and reform". He played an instrumental role in the positioning of the socialist party as a more centrist alternative.
The Italian politician served as the leader of the Italian Socialist Party from 1976 to 1993 and the 45th prime minister of Italy from 1983 – 1987.
Death
The veteran statesman self-exiled to Tunisia shortly before he was convicted of political corruption. In 2000, Bettino Craxi died of diabetes at 65.
