About Bob Burns
He was born in Arkansas in the US and named Robin Burn at birth. He was a comedian and musician. Bob Burns played the cornet and trombone as a child and formed a band at thirteen.
How did Bob Burns discover the bazooka?
In the 1910s, Burns discovered this musical instrument when he picked a gas pipe and blew into it. He liked the sound it made and named it the ‘bazooka’. Since then, he has been credited for inventing this musical instrument as well as popularizing it.
Career
He was a peanut farmer at one point and also studied civil engineering. He joined the United States Marine Corps during the 1st World War. The Marine Corps Jazz band made him their leader in Europe. He made a bazooka there which he sometimes played for the band.
He took his pipe along with him when the war was over and played it during his story and joke performances. When he attended an audition with a Los Angeles radio station, the way he improvised when his ten minutes performance was changed to thirty minutes got him the job.
In 1938, he hosted The Tenth Academy Awards. He hosted “The Arkansas Traveler” and “The Bob Burns Show”; his own radio shows between 1941 to 1943 and 1943 to 1947, respectively.
He featured in “Up the River” in a movie in 1930 where he played his bazooka. He kept acting in different movies for a few years though his roles were not usually main roles.
Death
In February 1956, he died of kidney cancer.
