About Carlo Azeglio Ciampi
Carlo Azeglio Ciampi worked with the Bank of Italy before starting his political journey. While with the central bank, he served as the Director General, and later as the Governor. His first ministerial appointment came in 1993 when he was named as the Tourism and Entertainment Minister. That same year, he became Italy’s Prime Minister.
In 1994, the Italian politician was sent to head the Ministry of Interior. He later became the Minister of Treasury, Budget and Economic Programming in 1996. He left this position in 1999 when he was voted as the President of the country. His respect for Italy’s constitution earned him lots of admirers.
Personal Life
He had two children with Franca Pilla.
Education
At the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, he read classical philology and Greek literature. Ciampi went on to study at the University of Pisa.
Decorations
In 1985, he was named a Commander of France’s Legion of Honour. He earned other laurels such as the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, and the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Trivia
He was a member of the Action Party between 1943 and 1947.
In 2006, he was named a Senator for Life.
